Eirik Bakke gave Leeds the lead after twenty-four minutes, while Robbie Keane added a second thirteen minutes later as Leeds had the better of the play, but the home side pulled one back two minutes before the break when Kiatisak Senamuang, who formerly played for Huddersfield Town, scored. Once more Venables rang the changes at half-time with three replacements. They were Danny Mills for Frazer Richardson at Right Back, Ian Harte for Jonathan Woodgate and Olivier Dacourt for Eirik Bakke in midfield. He brought on Jason Wilcox for Alan Smith in midfield in the fifty-eighth minute and eleven minutes later he made three more changes. Paul Robinson had excelled in goal and had proved that he was a near certainty for the goalkeeper's jersey and so Danny Milosevic was given a chance to prove his worth, while Jason Burns was given time in place of Lee Bowyer and Michael Bridges had another chance to prove his fitness as Mark Viduka gave way. Four minutes later Michael Duberry replaced Lucas Radebe, before, in the eighty-second minute, Stephen McPhail replaced Harry Kewell and Shane Cansdell-Sherriff came on for Dominic Matteo.
